The happy hutch company we design and manufacture top quality rabbit hutches, guinea pig hutches, dog kennels, cat kennels . Many considerations take place in the design of these pets homes first we look at the common trends like the size , shape and even the colour. Then we take a look at the new trends which we have found to be that the public are demanding good quality rabbit hutches, they also want more imaginative designs like our best seller the sykes combo hutch & run this is always a winner with the children.
When considering a new home for your rabbit you must first decide what size you require this will depend greatly on the size of your pet. You must also consider greatly which design of rabbit hutch is more suitable for you and the materials the rabbit hutch is made from for outdoor use you must always buy a good waterproof rabbit hutch this is not such a big concern if you are buying an indoor rabbit hutch. The most important factors are that your pet should be warm, dry, safe and secure and also has enough room to exercise follow these simple rules and your pet should stay happy.
There is different types of housing for pet rabbits to show rabbits in our opinion you usually find that pet rabbits are kept outdoors in single rabbit hutches with a living area and a partitioned sleeping area while show rabbits are kept in blocks of hutches usually indoors and there hutches can be all living area.
The housing needs again varies for outdoor and indoor kept rabbits. Rabbits which are kept outdoors must have a hutch that is waterproof with a felt roof to withstand the bad weather and also the living area needs a mesh door front to allow light and ventilation into the hutch the partitioned bed area needs a solid wood door so the rabbit is warm on cold nights. The internal hutch can be manufactured with thinner wood and does not have to be waterproof and does not need a felted roof and you do not need separate bed and living sections
When considering a hutch space is of optimum importance we always recommend for a normal size rabbit a hutch no smaller than 4ftx18"x18"or if you have more than one rabbit then a hutch 5ftx2ftx2ft would be required or larger depending on how many rabbits you need to house.
Our opinion on good housing is that all hutches should be made of good quality timber which has been treated to keep it waterproof it must have a felt roof to keep out the rain and be spacious but also warm and dry.
We recommend for good long lasting flooring the best 6mm outdoor ply this is the ply we use. This is safe for the rabbit but is strong and durable and won't rot within a few weeks of purchasing your hutch.
When buying hutches for outdoor use remember to consider that in cold weather your rabbit needs a warm area of hutch to shelter I.E. the bed area with plenty of hay added to keep them warm ,and also a cover to put over the mesh door on a night to stop the cold entering ,but just as important in hot weather they need plenty of ventilation through the mesh door so position your hutch out of direct sunlight and maybe consider a hutch with a run so your rabbit can escape the heat of the hutch and graze in the cool grass.
There are many accessorise on the market which will enrich your rabbits environment in our opinion non more so than a rabbit run this can be in the form of an extension of there hutch. We manufactures hutches with runs underneath and also hutches with runs in front. and now our new best seller sykes hutch and run combo ,You can also purchase separate runs with box backs ideal in summer as the rabbit has a cool shaded area to rest. A run gives the rabbit some freedom and exercise from there hutches no rabbit should be without one.
Our philosophy is that we always believe that a happy pet lives in a happy hutch and we strive in making top quality goods in which our pets would be proud to live in. by HAPPYHUTCH CO
WINTER IS COMING
As the colder weather approaches it is time to make sure that your hutch is in a decent enough condition to get through winter.Following a few simple steps should keep your pets warm and safe over the cold months.
At the happy hutch company we would suggest a good check around the whole outside of the hutch starting at the roof make sure the felt isn't torn or damaged if it is replace the felt with new as this is the only guarantee against rain leaking into your hutch.
If the roof is okay next make sure the wood on the outside of the hutch is well treated with a good wood preserver this stops the bad weather penetrating the wood and helps to stop it rotting, any water based wood preserver should be fine but please check the instructions on the pot before using as it must be safe to use near animals. I would also suggest removing pets from there hutch while carrying out the preservation of the hutch. Once preserved this treatment shouldn't need carrying out again until the following winter.
If all wood is okay check the little things like the hinges (oil every week )and fasteners if broken or rusted replace for new. we always suggest in really bad weather and cold nights to get a cover for the mesh door this stops the cold penetrating the hutch they are available from the happyhutch co made from the best materials and are easy to fit they have a clear thick pvc plastic window so your pet can still see out but no cold weather is getting into the hutch
For good insulation add plenty of hay and straw to the bed area for comfortable warm nights for your pet. Hay is warmer than straw but combined together they add great insulation. Always remember this is your pets home and with a few quick simple checks it can make all the difference to a happy safe winter for your pet and if you really think your hutch isn't probably going to see you through the winter i would seriously consider maybe investing in a new one. http://www.happyhutch.co.uk/
